LAN connection is fine, but no Internet

I have a HP dv1000 laptop connected to a LAN. It's running Windows XP. It's brand new, and nothing is installed except the OS that came with it (XP Home Ed. SP2). There should be no possible spyware or virus, since it has never been online, and nothing is installed.

It connects perfectly to the LAN, and I have no problems pinging localhost/127.0.0.1 or opening shared folders on other PC's on the LAN. But when I open up IE and try to visit some web page, it's no go.

The computer gets a "correct" IP address assigned by DHCP - it's in the 10.0.0.1 range, and I know it's correct because it's similar (but not identical) to the IP's of the other laptops connected to the same LAN (which work fine on the Internet).

The really strange thing is that when I try to ping some web-server, say "ping www.google.com" from the command prompt, I get:

    Pinging www.1.google.com [66.249.85.104] with... etc.

In other words, it resolves the IP-address and the "real" server (www.1.google.com), but all packets are lost, and I get "request timed out".

I guess it's not a hardware fault, considering everything's "working". So do you have any idea why I cannot get an Internet connection in any true sense?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Kind regards,
    Chris

Have you tried disabling the sp2 firewall?

    Try this:

Start - Run - type "cmd" [without the quotes] and press Enter.

Now type the following without the quotes, and press Enter after:
    "netsh winsock reset"

    Reboot.

Jaynee, thanks for responding. First of all, I took the laptop with me to work, and it gets an internet connection here, so I guess it has something to do with the LAN settings where I live. I tried disabling the SP2 firewall, but that didn't help.

Bradly, I will try out your tip. Thanks!

    Kind regards,
    Chris

Could you use cmd and type ipconfig /all and post the result - might give clue to you prob.

Also do you have a firewall on your laptop?
