    Slow shutting down/logging off

Hi, wasn't sure if this should be in here or the hardware section but i figured it might be due to a problem with xp itself rather then my actual comp so here goes. Basically the majority of the time when i either shut down/restart or log off/change users on my comp it takes forever to actually do so, will eventually do so but can take up to 5 mins. Sometimes the moniter will switch off first while the hardrive keeps going and eventually gets round to shutting down, others they take as long as each other. Let occasionally it will shut down as quick as it used to do. Hopefully its not a major problem, its just a big pain in the ass.

This problem is probably being caused by the fact that you have too many processes running. When you shut down or log off, your computer (the operating system) needs to work to close all the processes by itself. Before shutting down or logging off, try closing all open programs and documents. If the problem still persists, go to Start > > > Run > > > and then type in logoff. Check if that makes it log off faster and then post back.

Let me know if I've helped.

Please do something else for me...
Download HijackThis at http://www.isecurity.org.uk/downloads/hijackthis.zip. Please remember that when you unzip HijackThis, DO NOT unzip/install to a temporary folder or your dekstop. Create a folder in your C drive called HJT and then unzip it to C:\HJT. Do a scan on hijack this and post the log here. Normally, you would post the HJT logs in that part of the forum, however, I just need to see the processes.

    Thanks.

Hi, i tried doing run:logoof, it worked the first time but not the second, i also tried a couple of the solutions in the link you gave me and they didnt make a difference either. I always close all programs before i shut down but it just randomly shuts down either straight away or takes up to 5 mins! But i done a hijackthis log, hopefully that might tell you soemthing that will help :

Maybe not related, but I have a slow shut-down too. I found that disabling the Norton Anti-virus Auto-protection helps alot, before you tell the system to shut-down/reboot.

I used a program called xp smoker pro to fine tune all windows features.

If you use the recommended setting like I did it really shuts down your computer very fast.

It's shareware and you can try it free for a couple of weeks I think.

Just google to find the site.

    It worked for me!!
