A Repair Install might be fine. The creation of a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD is a good idea also. Just to clarify: a Repair Install is not the Recovery Console. A Repair Install should maintain your data.

All the pros & cons of these options are covered at this usefull site:

Also this from your ASUS manual:

The heatsink may adhere to the CPU as a result of hardening of the heatsink paste. To prevent
such an occurrence, it is suggested that either thermal tape rather than heat sink paste be used for
heat dissipation or using extreme care when removing the heatsink.

it should be gigabyte manual first off, and second, its the clips that are the annoying part, putting too much pressure on the mobo always scares me

k, got if off, put on more thermal compound, and it froze up again during gta

the cpu was at 67*C... now im beggining to see that it might be thermal. all my fans are working and heatsink is on right with compound, how else can i lower the CPU temp?

Just a quick try: run with the case open.
Maybe also blow a room fan onto the open case.
See if there is any difference.

do you think it might be the PSU, it is stock from the case i bought and seems kinda cheap

i left my copmuter off allll night, and within 5 minutes, the temps went from 47-54 for the cpu and 29-34

    running no programs

that also seems a little hot for the comp to start at too
