I think that I had a virus and using AVG removed the infected file. Unfortunately I cannot boot now and keep getting the message -

file is missing or corrupt, please reinstall -

Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

If anybody can help on reinstalling that would be great.

if you have a xp recovery disk try reinstalling from there as it will be on it

Thanks spud. Unfortunately the recovery disc would not sort the problem so I ended up re-installing XP. Now Im in the process of re-installing the rest of my software!!!
