Multiple XP Boots
Hey guys,
New member here, I have windows XP home ed. on my laptop and while trying to fix a problem installed another copy of XP on my computer, so I have multiple boot options for which copy I want to use. I fixed the problem, but don't know how to get rid of the new installation, so that it boots up into my origional install and not give me an option. Hope that makes sense.
Peace

you need to tell us what partition each installation is on, and which one you would like to delete.
-
They are installed on the same partition. And it is the newest XP install that I want to delete.
-
Ive only ever deleted multiple xp's from different partitions, but I found this:
I have two installations of XP on the same partition, how do I remove the one I don't need?
Boot to the desired version of Windows XP you want to keep. Making note of the position in the boot menu. This will be important when you edit boot.ini.
Open a command prompt * and type " echo %windir%" without the quotes. This will give you the current Windows folder you are using.
From Explorer, delete the folder containing the installation you want to remove. The original install folder is usually called Windows and subsequent folders will be derivatives of Windows or Winnt.
From System Properties [Winkey+Pause/Break] > Advanced Tab > Statup and Recovery > Settings > Edit.
Select the Edit button and from notepad, first backup boot.ini, by going to File; Save As and rename boot.ini. to something like boot.inibak.
Remove the line referencing the installation not chosen; you made note of in step one.
Set timeout=0 so the system boots directly into Win XP (you will not get the boot menu).
Save As boot.ini & Exit.
Reboot.
* To access the command prompt: Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt or from Start>RUN>Type "CMD" without the quotes, then press OK.
ive just copy and pasted the above, but the site i got it off was pretty no-nonsense.
btw, if when you open the cmd prompt, the defualt directory is your docuemtns and settings folder, youll need to type chdir c:\ and then do the echo %windir% line

You will need to edit the boot.ini file & be forewarned this can be a little tricky. Right click My Computer, choose Properties, choose Advanced, Look under Startup & Recovery and click Settings. And follow the instructions in the attachment to open the boot.ini file. You will need to locate the line for the installation you don't want and delete the line. If your not 100 % sure you know what you are doing I would advise you to seek help from a tech. HTH

Sorry Jen I didn't see your post before I sent mine, oops
