my computer freezes at startup and..
when I try to launch a program or when I try to download or upload an update or try to run a scan. I have a hijackthis log on http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread.php?t=22110. I was just wondering what could be happening because I tried to do a defrag on safe mode and it also froze. I'm writing this for my husband so i don't know everything that is going on with the machine but tonight he was able to play a game on pogo but when he tried to play another one the puter froze and now it freezes at reboot too. it seems that if the puter is off for some time he can at least play one game but then it freezes and the mouse does nothing. He can't even do ctrl alt delete. thanks for any help.

Did this just start happening? Were things OK before?
How old is this computer? What is the make & model?
Do you notice any Hot Spots on the case? Alot of dust?
Are you familiar with opening the case?

Hi jephree,
It started awhile ago with something buzzing in the case. It stopped after the puter was on for a little and then every time it was booted the rattle would start so my husband pulled it and checked for dust and noticed that the internet port was loose and fell out so he fixed that and pushed it back into place. He says that the internet thing wasn't what was rattleing but it was the fan. He cleaned it with the can of air and now its been not wanting to work (the puter freezing i mean). It just stalls and the cursor stops.
The computer is windows xp home edition elite group. product key . its 2 years old. there aren't any hot spots? There was alot of dust but he blew that out and he says that was before the problem. My husband is familiar with opening the case.
we posted a startup log file on http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread.php?t=22110. We started that thread first and then it turned out to be nothing wrong with the file. then "HJThis" asked us for the startup log. So i understand if you just want us to work with them first. Sorry if we confused everyone. I worked with you alot with my computer "kizzmit5".

I edited your post as to the product key. You do not want to show that to anyone.
I am looking at your other thread & will see what HJThis has to say about that log.
We need to see if this is a hardware or software issue.
My first guess is hardware. Fans? Heat? Connections? All these things will show the exact same behavior: Freeze.
Software errors usually will shut down the machine.
2 places to check:
Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with a crash.
Also:
Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the location of your latest .dmp file.
Then:
1) Download and install the
Debugging Tools from Microsoft
2) Download and install this
debugwiz
3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your latest .dmp file.
4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

I have found some mini dmp files but so far the latest one was in january. should I have found newer ones?
-
it froze twice while i was doing the search. i'll try in a little bit? lol i don't know what to do lol.
-
Those old files will probably not show much as to the current problem.
Try running check disk:
start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors

ok, i have done that and its rebooted. It went to fast for me to read any of it though. did you still want me to do the debugging?

I saw HJThis wanted you to stop one AV. You should try that. Don't want to mix more things up.
Unless you have a recent dump log there is probably no sence in pulling them up.
Again a "freeze" would probably not create a log; whereas a windows failure would have.
when you are done with HJThis let us know. My next approach would be to do some hardware checks.
