Fast user switching

Fast user switching
When I try and switch users in XP (START=>logoff=>switchuser) nothing happens. This used to work. I have tried going to the control panel=>user accounts=>change the way users logon/logoff and checking the fast user switcing. After pressing apply I retun and find the box is unchecked. I recently had a bad spyware infection and ran a number of spyware removal tools. Could one of these have removed something it should not have?
