Exclamation Why Has My Laptop Drastically Slowed Down

All of a sudden my laptop has slowed down considerably, once I have typed in my password on the log in screen, it takes a long time to load upto the destop, it never used to, it used to take a couple of seconds, now it takes i dunno, 40 or more seconds. I don't use the internet on it, i've run virus checkers, coming back clear, I have 17GB of space left on it, with a 25GB hard drive, so why is it doing this, what can I do to stop it?

    Do you defrag?

go to Start/ all programs/ accessories/ system tools/ Disk Defragmenter

    Also run check disk:

    start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

    Did you try chkdsk?

Here is a good cleaner (may help)

    http://www.ccleaner.com/

Here is a program to view everything that is starting up:

    Hi mr_film,
If you have installed ANY new Windows "updates" or service packs (ie. SP1 or SP2)... then you need to goto START> RUN> MSCONFIG and disable programs that automatically start when your computer starts up.
    HOPE THIS HELPS,
