You could also try this not to say it may fix the problem
but it will be out of the way.

open up the PC try Unpluging stuff like hard drives
power box the plug them back in then try a reboot
& try the same with the Ram's

who knows we are talking about PC's here

Try the 6 floppy setup disks to enter the Recovery Console.

The first thing to try is chkdsk

If that doesn't help try some of the other options listed in the links.

If nothing works there see if you can borrow an XP CD.
You will need to know your Product Key however.
