Is your PC connected to a network?
If it's not, you need to delete the local area network connection but I'm not sure how you do that in Windows XP. Do you have an icon for My Network Places on your desktop? If so, maybe right-clicking it and going to Properties will show you your connections and allow you to delete the Local Area Network connection if you think you don't need it.

go to start left click- goto CONNECT TO left click -then show all connections LEFT CLICK- right click over your local connection then delete HOPE THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED

When I click on all connections, shows:
Broadband
jorge broadband Connected,Firealled WAN Miniport(PPPOE) System
LAN or High-Speed Internet
1934 Connection 2 LAN or High Speed Inter Disabled,Firewalled 1394 Net Adapter System
Local Area Connection 3 LAN or High Speed Inter Limited or no conoctivit Intel(R)PRO/ 100 VM Net System
I use jorge to log to the internet.
I can not delete the 3rd one, only disable, but doing this turns the connection to the internet off.(jorge)

have you tried right clicking on the connection you dont want on the task bar or what about a system restore if you know roughly when your pc went mad

Ojorge,
Is your PC connected to a hardware firewall / router via your network card with a CAT5 cable? Is it the firewall / router that is plugged into your telephone line, rather than your PC itself?
-
No it's not.
A couple months ago my brother-in-law purchase McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004 V.6.0, came with 2 disks, some kind of deal(?) and ehe gave me one.I had an old version of Norton but was updated.Since than,I had only problems.I keep getting a message:Application ressources could not be loaded successfully. Please reinstall McAfee SecurityCenter.
I already installed the all program a couple times.
Now I don't know how to uninstall the whole program.
Thanks

So you have a USB broadband modem plugged into the back of your PC then?
You need to get rid of McAfee Internet Security Suite as it seems to be blocking your connection with a firewall - it's probably supposed to do that but it doesn't look like it's doing it properly.
Also, your Windows XP believes that you have a network card (or maybe a network port on your motherboard) inside your PC and there is a Local Area Network (LAN) connection configured on it.
