    PC Doing It's Own Thing!

Can anyone help please. I have a Toshiba A60 Laptop. About a week ago Windows Apps just started opening on their own.

    Here's a list:
Calculator, Outlook, Search, Windows Media Player. Start menun, where it jumps from item to item. It has even connected, opened IE, typed a few random letters and numbers and gone away to search.

I have reformatted and reinstalled three times but this has not cured it.

Anybody any idea what has infected my pc or what settings have become corrupted?

It is really annoying to be trying to do something and the pc takes over and does something else.

Try the Toshiba hard drive diagnostic.

    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...ceghdgngdgmn.0

That page is for Satalite A60-S156 specifically. You can backtrack to find your particular model if different although the diagnostics & utilities appear to cover all A60's.

You will find drivers & BIOS upgrades there also.

Thanks for the link. Download the diagnostic tool and everything is ok.

So I guess it's back to the question of anyone got any ideas as to what has taken over my pc?

Are you saying the diagnostics said everything is ok but you still have the problems?

You can try to run check disk:
    start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with these issues.

I would verify your exact model number & upgrade your BIOS & then reinstall XP.

Is this a full version XP CD you are using or a Toshiba recovery CD?

You can also try Malware issues although if you have done 3 full reinstallations this seems unlikely.
To do this please follow owen's Instructions and then post your log in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section (Not Here).

Have run chkdsk/f - didn't seem to change anything??

Have saved two txt files of errors but seems alot of stuff to cut and paste here, so can you let me know what exactly you mean by 'post back the source and event id' - also not sure what qualifies as 'coinciding with issues' as the apps open every few minutes or so!

Have also posted a HijackThis log as suggested.

Reformats/reinstalls were twice with full Win XP CD and once with Recovery CD.

Intend to wait response to this and HijackThis posting before doing anything else.

    Thanks for help so far.

You can attach your .txt files with the options below the reply window.

    -Attach Files-

Most important is to get your HiJackThis resolved. Follow up on that first.

I wonder about "Reformats/reinstalls were twice with full Win XP CD and once with Recovery CD."

Was XP pre-installed on this computer OEM? Is that the Toshiba Recovery Disk? If so; then are you saying that you tried to use a full XP CD on top of that?

    Hi
Have just reposted logfile as requested.

Laptop came with Win XP [Home] preinstalled + recovery cd. Awhile back PC would not boot into Windows so used Win XP disc supplied with other Laptop we have. Everything was running fine for ages until the apps opening issue so it can't be because I reformatted and re-installed with Win XP cd instead of recovery cd.

So when the apps opening issues started and System Restore failed to cure it, I opted for complete reformat and reinstall with Win XP cd. As stated this failed to cure it, so tried again, still apps were opening, so thought perhaps restoring with recovery cd would work, but apps still opening.

As suggested will follow up on HiJackThis before doing anything else.

    Thanks.

    Hi

HiJackThis doesn't seem to show anything. Have scanned and defragged in Safe mode and nothing.

Have attached files, but can you let me know correct way to verify model number and update BIOS.

    Thanks

    1. How is your drive partitioned?

    2. From your Application log Click on one of these lines & post back the description:
    Error 15/05/2005 17:37:39 MsiInstaller None 11324 W R TOSHIBA

    3. You are running McAfee? Have you been uninstalling/ reinstalling it?

    4. Model #. Toshiba lists these models:

    A60-S156
    A60-S1561
    A60-S159
    A60-S1591
    A60-S1591ST
    A60-S1592ST
    A60-S166
    A60-S1661
    A60-S1662

    Hi

    1. Laptop drive not partitioned. Have external drive.
    2. Error description relates to fact that I changed drive letters after I had installed MS Office. Although all other progs picked up change. Resolved issue by changing drive letter back, uninstalling office, changing drive letter again then reinstalling office.

Thanks for the links. HiJackThis has confirmed it can't find any hidden problems. So do you suggest going ahead with updating the BIOS and starting again?
