what is shellicon hidden widow?
When I was loggiong off yesterday, I got an "end task" box telling me that shellicon hidden window was still running. I can't find the program anywhere in that name and have no idea where it came from does anyone have any idea what? when? where? why? please email me if you have any clue

Hmmm. Multiple searches so far (Microsoft.com, MSKB, Google, etc) haven't turned up much on this (other than threads which are hard to find by digging through sites without a search tool on those sites).
I did find one, but it hasn't been confirmed as to whether the suggested fix works.
I'll keep looking though.

Is this a repetitive issue or did it happen just once?
shelliconcache is a hidden file. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer, and go to View>Folder Options>View tab. Under "Hidden files", click in the radio button beside "Show all files", then click on Apply and OK. Now you should be able to find the shelliconcache file via Search (it's in the C:\Windows folder, or WINNT).
You can empty this file & or create a larger cache if neccessary.
(It might have been clearing itself.)
However would only suggest this if it is an ongoing issue.

Hi jephree, I initially thought along those lines as well. However, this is a seperate issue. Several searches turned up other people asking the same question re; "shellicon hidden window", with the same problem description. The "error" message occurs on shutdown. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear (yet) to be any answers. My first stop was Microsoft.com, but various search attempts with different spellings etc (shellicon hidden window, shell icon hidden window, etc) turned up blank. So did the other sites/threads. The question is there, but alas, no answer (yet).

Thanks jephree. That second link is the most information I've seen on this.

Hello and G'day to all (night time here) here's my first post with you.
I've just finished setting up a new HDD and for the last couple of hours I too had the same pain in the butt shutdown message "Shellicn Hidden Window"!
Research and solid info about it is in short supply and that's what brought me here in the first place ....and now it's fixed. Want to know how ...? Read on Mc Duff .....beware, this may become a 2 part story (I'm getting pretty sleepy and worn out, I guess a few vinos and beers hasn't helped any).
This is far from a difinitive answer or solution as to the exact cause of the prob (I'm no rocket scientist or computer programmer .....but 7 out of 10 tries I can reproduce the problem and every time I'm able to fix it again - at least on my PC, I can) ... and I guess that qualifies me for some kind of opinion which may be able to help others.
My first stop (after no joy here or with other boards) was
http://search.microsoft.com/results....n-GB&FORM=SSME
The prob wasn't there for most of the time when I was loading progs, updates etc., and rebooting / loading progs, updates, and rebooting and so on ..... so that helped narrow the field and led me to reconsidering what I'd done and what I'd loaded in the last minutes or 1/2 hour or so of my HDD setup.
I know for certain it's not a virus because I was defragging and running virus and spyware checks during the course of setting up (to save the long time consuming waits to do all that at the end of the job ....not 1 virus or spyware was found on any of those short intermediate checks and I wasn't even connected to the net so that's ruled out as well.
I'm now convinced that it is HOW I did things (particularly around the time of rebooting) rather than WHAT or WHICH programs and updates I had loaded. However, before I can totally rule out the programs and update side of the issue .....I am interested to find out if there are any programs or conditions which may be a common factor between all those who experience this problem of "Shellicon Hidden Window".
It is possible that the order of progam shutdown at reboot may have a bearing (eg. some users lose mouse control almost immediately a reboot starts while other can still move the cursor wich remains active for a short time after the reboot has commenced).
In my case, I can still move the cursor for a short time after and it is still active, also at shut down and startup there is a lag (small but still quite noticable) between when a cordless mouse versus a hard wired serial mouse become active.
Comparison with other users who have experienced this problem is the only way I am going to find that out for sure . If you have experienced this problem - What kind of mouse have you got?
Take a hint from all the topics and subject headings at the above link .......it is to do with passing ownership of icon or items (links or commands) from 1 window (the open desktop) to another hidden or suspended state (window) at the the time the system begins it's shut down ....I don't know the tech jargon .
Enough for now - I'll follow this subject up with more info soon as I've had more time to play and dig deeper. Sorry about the length - they'll be much more breif in future.
