Cannot install drivers in win xp

    Hello,
I have a problem to install some drivers (Audio and Printer) which starts 2 weeks ago. I don't know what I did to cause this problem. I mess a lot with my computer and I don't remember what exactly I did wrong. All I know is that I cannot here sound right now and every attempt to install the audio (and printer) drivers wind up with an error code (28) or with a message like "cannot istall driver, cannot find the specified file.." or something like that.
BTW, I'm using dell laptop latitude c600, OS win xp sp2.
    Thanks in advance,
    Matan.

Check the Device Manager: RT click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager or go to start/run/ devmgmt.msc

What is listed under Sound, Video, & Game Controllers?

Also is there any listing under Other Devices?

Also what is the exact make & model of Printer?

As a first step remove the printer & all related software.

Search google for a driver for your audio device.

Once you get that settled search google for the latest software for the printer. Follow printer software instructions closely.

    Post back for further assistence.

under Sound, Video, & Game Controllers:
    Legacy video capture devices
    Media control devices
    Video codecs
    No Other devices.
the printer is hp1150, but it seems like a generic problem and not related to the printer or the printer's driver because I get the same error message if I install the Audio driver or the printer's driver.
I went to Dell.support.com and download the latest audio driver.
    still, the same problem.
another thing, now it seems that the Display driver start to give me the same problem - there is exclamation mark (!) near the driver in the computer management.

How old is this computer? Is it still under waranty?

Do you have the Recovery Disks?

Just as a long shot you can try a System Restore back "2 weeks ago" before problems started.

    No, It's not under waranty
And I also don't have the recovery disk.
I tried system restore for 2 weeks back and at this point he tells me that there wasn't any system change. And for some reason I cannot go back sooner then the 2nd of May.

Perhaps you can find a diagnostic or something here:

    http://support.dell.com/support/down...&os=WW1&osl=EN

If drivers & or diagnostics don't work you can always try to flash the BIOS.

Yes, I installed this diagnostic tool, but I don't know how to activate it. The only .exe file there doesn't work. (I tried it from the Dos Shell either).
What do you mean Flash the Bios?

Did you unzip the file etc. ?

Diagnostics: Dell 32 Bit Diagnostics, Diagnostics, English, Multi System, A1102

This file format consists of an archive of files that may be decompressed to a directory on the hard drive. The installation can then be done from that directory.

The flash BIOS is the latest BIOS version. You download this & then create a bootable floppy to update your BIOS.

    FlashBIOS Updates

This file format consists of a BIOS executable file. To use it, download the file and copy it to a DOS-bootable diskette. With the diskette in the floppy drive, reboot the system and run the program.

I unziped it. But when I execute it, it opens a dos window for a second and then close without do nothing. And when I execute it from the dos prompt I receive this error message:
"Abnormal program termination: Memory protection fault CS:EIP = 01FFh:0000BB99h"

I'll try the Flash Bios and see if it works.

I also downloaded the Dell Diagnostic Driver (with GUI) and am getting the exact same error:

    C:\DELL\drivers\R137550>Delldiag
Abnormal program termination: Memory protection fault
    CS:EIP = 01FFh:0000BB99h

    Suggestions?
