I would suggest checking all your connections.
    Check the Device Manager.
    Consider returning it.

thanks Dal..I've checked my connections and what I ended up doing was unplugging it for 20 minutes and then checking it again. Now the device is recognized in the device manager and it says it is working properly, however, all it does is open, it still does not recognize any disc that i insert in it. Now what? I also have considered returning it but it's been over a year since March.

When you said: "I installed a cd burner/player a few days ago and it worked just long enough to burn 2 cd and hasn't worked since." I figured it was a new drive.

Does the light flash when you boot up? Does the light flash when you insert a disk?

What happens when you insert a disk? Do you see the CD icon flash by the mouse?

With a disk in the drive go to My Computer & right click the drive then click Properties.
    What do you see?

Also check to see if the BIOS recognises the drive. Set the BIOS to boot the CD before the hard drive & see if you can boot your XP CD.

Also check the manufacturers site for the latest drivers.

when I go to my computer I see tabs for my driver. I have 0 bytes of free space, hmm how is that so?? and the last step I do not know how to do..thank you for helping me with this. I finally feel like i'm getting somewhere..waiting reply

    TRY:

My Computer: right click the CD drive then click Properties then AutoPlay

    Click the button that says:

Prompt me each time to choose an action.

    And insert disk again.

OK I did that and it still will not play.
The model of the driver is a Sony CD-RW CRX215E5
now i'm concerned about it saying that I do not have any free space. If it is the (E drive? how can I not have any free space on it? I'm thinking that I need to delete the "files" that are evidently on it? I have tried to look up updates..I've found it on a list on the web but it tells me that it is currently the updated and cannot find a better version? Maybe that will save us a few steps huh? I cannot seem to find these files that's taking up the space on it..

It might just be not reading the CD therefore saying 0 bytes.

    Found this strange link:

    there was this possible fix:
