    Did things work ok before?

Try pressing the F8 key after the bios to get safe mode options.

    Choose last known good configuration.

    Hi,

Yes things were ok day before,I did however install some software from the net which i did not scan!
The problem started on my next boot up.
I have tried to use f8 but I cannot get to safe mode!
My hard disc feels like it is working. And my bios informs me 'waitng for operating system to load'
My PC is a new build,I did not make a recovery disc either......Fool.
I am using XP Pro with sp2.

Any more ideas? Can I download a recovery disc that may help me?

    Cheers

How did you originally install XP?

With the XP disk you can run a repair install:

If for whatever reason you do not have an XP CD you can run the Recovery Console from the 6 floppy setup.
This offers very limited repair options but I suppose it is better than nothing.

    Hi,
I installed with my XP pro disc.
Thanks for that,I have tried to boot with my XP Disc. The disc spins up in the drive,I see a message 'Set up inspecting hardware config' but nothing happens.I just see a blank screen.
I will try the floppy option you suggested and see what happens.

    Look here:

    http://www.windowsitlibrary.com/Cont...1/2.html?Ad=1&

    Scroll down to this section:

    SETUP HANGS DURING HARDWARE INSPECTION

At one point during installation, Setup sends a text message saying that it’s inspecting your hardware. The actual message is “Setup is inspecting your computer’s hardware configuration.” A minute passes, perhaps two minutes. You begin to think that nothing is ever going to happen. Go into another room, make a phone call, make a pot of coffee, run to the nearest deli and get a sandwich to go. When you return, if Setup is still inspecting your hardware, you have a problem. Your computer is hung, frozen, dead. The reason I say that you should find something to do before deciding this is that sometimes the hardware inspection really does take a couple of minutes (perhaps even more), and I don’t want you to declare a hung computer too early.

You have to shut off your machine and start it again, but you’ll experience the same thing unless you take some steps to determine and correct the problem. I’ll go over the possibilities here, starting with the most common problem and working my way down to the less common ones.
This is followed with the possible causes.

    Hi,
Have tried to wait, hour or more.No change!

Are you recommending I follow the later steps?I ask, as it refers to windows NT.Also my mother board will carry out its post check which includes memory and VGA tests will this alone not show a component fault.

Changing components like this is not easy,if you have no spares!

    cheers

Have you tried accessing the Recovery Console?

Another tack would be to create a bootable floppy diagnostic for your hard drive. Here is a list:
