You need to make a simple registry edit in order to reinstall/ repair IE.

It is detailed towards the bottom of this page:

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

    Under the heading:

Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system.
    Setup cannot continue.

I would suggest you follow this & reinstall to a working order whether you use it or not. IE is in part imbedded in XP & cannot be removed. Having it in a damaged condition might also affect other performance issues in XP.

    Hope this helps.

im sorry to bother you gaen...but it didnt work..i did the following:

To repair or reinstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP, complete the following procedure while you are logged on as an administrator:
    1. Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
    a. Click Start, and then click Run.
    b. In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK.

Note that you may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1 installation media.
    2. Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, skip the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
    3. Complete an in-place upgrade of Windows XP, a repair of Windows XP, or reinstall Windows XP. For additional information about how to complete an in-place upgrade or repair of Windows XP, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
315341 How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
    4. To reinstall Windows XP updates, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

do you have ne other tips...id really appreciate it and i cant use reinstall microsoft windows xp because i lost the cd and everything...sry for making it difficult..but ne ideas...

This is the end of that page:

Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet Explorer 6

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
When you try to reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:
Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system.
    Setup cannot continue.

To avoid this error message and reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, follow these steps: 1. While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    3. Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.

To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
To reinstall only Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
    4. Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.
    5. Quit Registry Editor, and then install Internet Explorer 6.
    6. To reinstall Windows XP updates, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

By default, Internet Explorer 6 is preinstalled in all versions of Windows XP and cannot be removed. To provide computer manufacturers more flexibility in configuring desktop versions of Windows XP, Microsoft has made it possible for OEMs, administrators, and users to remove user access to Internet Explorer while leaving the Internet Explorer code intact and fully functional to make sure the functionality of programs and operating system functions that rely on it. For example, Windows XP supports an "IEAccess=off" switch in the Unattend.txt file, and Internet Explorer has been added to the Add/Remove Windows Components section of the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. This does not reinstall Internet Explorer.

    1. click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    3. To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
To reinstall only Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

Go thru this path by clicking the "+" signs next to the appropriate file:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\

With Installed Components open find the value:
    {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} (for IE)
click it & a list will appear on the right which will include:
    IsInstalled (REG_DWORD)

right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.

Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.

Do the same for the other listing re: Outlook Express if neccessary.

What this does is clears the registry of the presumed existence of IE & or OE.
In order to reinstall/repair you have to make the computer think that IE is not there. That is what you are doing simply by changing 1 to 0.

You will then be able to reinstall IE & or OE

Things do not get easier from here, sorry.

This thread seems to cover your issue:

    http://www.techimo.com/forum/printth...0&page=1&pp=20

Without an XP CD you will need to follow the ideas for running the Recovery Console from the 6 floppy setup disks found here:

    http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

The issue is said to arise from taking Windows Updates without rebooting as well as attempting to uninstall IE.

Here is the jist of the fix from the Recovery Console:

XP / shlwapi.dll error after installing windows updates.
After installing service pack 1, and then installing some other updates (possibly
without rebooting) you get the error.

"Winlogon.exe. Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous

could not be found in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.DLL."

    <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
    *** Resolution ***

"Winlogon.exe. Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous

could not be found in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.DLL."

You can only reboot after that.

    1. Boot to Recovery Console.

2 . type the following commands
    cd system32 [enter]

    ren winlogon.exe winlogon.old
    ren msgina.dll msgina.old
    ren shell32.dll shell32.old
    ren shlwapi.dll shlwapi.old

    cd.. [enter]
    cd servicepackfiles\i386 [enter]
    copy MSGINA.DLL c:\windows\system32
    copy SHELL32.DLL c:\windows\system32
    copy WINLOGON.EXE c:\windows\system32
    copy shlwapi.dll c:\windows\system32

if not there, expand from the cd

3 Type EXIT and hit enter
Without an XP CD you may need to download these files to a floppy as well, I am unsure about that. They may exist in a Repair sector of XP.

Another approach would be to borrow an XP CD from a friend as long as you know your Product Key any CD will do. Home for Home; Pro for Pro that is.
With all your other problems doing a full Repair Install of XP might be best for you.

    Hope this helps.
