Thank you for your help. I think that I am going to call it a day. Can I re-install the OS to fix it ....leads me to another question... i have XP on one pc and I want to join it to the domain. I have a version of XP pro is there a way that i can upgrade to XP pro without loosing my data or reformating or add the workstation to the domain?

First off this is a fairly common & simple issue. Reinstalling XP seems a bit extreem if this is your only issue. However a Repair Install will certainly fix it.
That being said an XP Upgrade will upgrade the OS while leaving your programs & data intact although you should back up.

Here is a good general Install guide:

    Links to Domain issues:

add the workstation to the domain

add the workstation to the domain 2

add the workstation to the domain 3

    Hope this helps.
