Windows updates
I have a windows update for an Nvidia sound file, NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface. Anyhow, everytime I try to install them it doesn't work, it just says unable to install the file. And then the critical updates icon (yellow shield) keeps popping up. On a related note my Counter Strike Source connection was getting much weaker around this time.

Any problem installing other windows updates?
When you go to windows update look in the left hand menu & open installation history.
Click the Nvidia to see any detailed errors. Just to clarify: this is showing up as a "Critical Update"?
Also check start/run/ dxdiag | sound for any issues.
Also check the Device Manager: RT click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager or go to Start | Run and type in: devmgmt.msc for any "!"
Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.

Alrighty, I'm going to answer everything you addressed step by step (I apologize if it's lengthy, but I appreciate it a lot)
I checked the History and the only things i've had errors with other than this are
1) Advanced Micro Devices processor software update released on December 17 2002. (June 22, 2004)
2) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2005 (KB890830) (April 14, 2005)
It just appears as the yellow shield that says 'Updates are ready for your computer,' so I don't think thats a 'Critical Update?'
I checked dxdiag | sound, and that said no problems found, and I gave the test a sound and that said it was fine.
In the Device Manager theres a red X under Network adapters, then 1394 Net Adapter (maybe this is one of the problems with my sluggish connection?). There is a Yellow ! under other devices, which is the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller.
The most common thing that pops up in my event view is a warning; source: Userenv, Event ID: 1517. That seems to come up a lot as I search, also other application errors with programs like Kazaa or Halflife 2, I don't think they're relevant though.
The X errors I found under System were all; Source: Windows Update Agent, Event Code: 20.
So that about sums up the results I found, again thank you very much for helping me out.

As to the nVidea update go to that update in windows update under hardware & select "Hide this update". That should take it off the Yellow Shield list.
If you are interested in nVidea updates you should check the nVidea site. It is generally recommended not to install driver or hardware updates via Windows Update without verifying their neccessity from the manufacturer.
As to the Malicious Software Removal Tool
try to run it from this link.
As to the red X under Network Adapters this is not unusual unless you are on a network. Are you? A 3com EtherLink is often disabled unless you are actually on a network. (Or: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=139...-8&hl=en&meta=
The USB Controller under "Other Devices" is saying that XP is not recognising your USB Controller for what it is. Are you using USB devices? Any problems there?
And lastly: Kazza is the source of many problems. I would consider removing it if I were you.

How do I get to the hardware section?
When I go to the site it automatically asks me how I want to intall the update (Express or Custom)
I also came across something weird, I double checked the history and it said the same update I've been having troubles with was already installed correctly! And this is all in the same day of history too.

First choose Custom
Then choose Select Optional Hardware Updates
_______________
I've had a few updates respond in the same manner ... I have no awnser other than it happens.
Updates can be viewed & deleted from Add/Remove Programs via Control Panel
(click on the top "Show Updates")

In case this happens to you, I went that Route, Control Panel, made sure "Show Updates" was checked at the top, and there wasn't a single update showing. Installation History goes back to April 6 so there's a lot of them. Computers are just quirky, Jephree?

Just another chip off the old block; indeed!
