    audio speeds

My mate has just given me an old lap top of his which was reformatted and has had windows xp put on it.
My trouble is, is that whenever i try to play any music files, they playback too quickly and sound a bit squeeky as if they are being played too fast. This happens if i stream radio off the internet, if i play music directly from the cd drive or if i copy music from a network straight onto my laptop and play it from mymusic folder. I have treid playing stuff through windows media player and win amp but either way the play back is too fast. Any suggestions as to what is wrong?

    Welcome to D-A-L

Do you have any Audio software or special programs installed?
    Mixers or studios or whatever?

There are alot of checks via Control Panel | Sound & Audio Devices

Also check the Device Manager: RT click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager or go to Start | Run and type in: devmgmt.msc for any "!"

The only audio software i installed was winamp which i installed only after music was being played too fast in microsoft media player.

I looked at the device manager and saw no exclamation marks. I have also noticed that playback is speeded up on things like video clips downloaded off the bbc website.

I think that the following is my audio controller if it helps!

    Intel 82801CA ICH3-S - AC'97

Try playing an audio & note the time.

    Then:

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with this time.

Nothing, no X's to be seen.
Its funny cos i also installed some pentax software onto my computer yesterday that i got with a digital camera, and when that software plays videos back that ive downloaded from my camera, then it also plays them at a fast speed.
My computer doesnt seem to want to play anything at the right speed!

    go to start/run/ dxdiag

under the sound tab lower the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level.

As to the video: also in dxdiag open the Display tab:
Verify there are no problems there.

Also what is your version of DirectX?

    What is your sound card?

    What is your graphics card?

Yes, sorry, I forgot you mentioned that.

Did you try adjusting the acceleration?

Intel refers one back to the board or computer manufacturer for these issues.

What is the exact make & model of the computer? & or Motherboard?

Here is a good general scan for your machine:

Post back data under these headings:

    System Model

    Main Circuit Board
