someone please help!
my pc with xp on it has just come up with this error:-
windows cannot start due to corrupt or missing file windows\system32\config\system.

ive tried rebooting from a previously good config but no joy.
can i get my pc back without wiping all my stuff of the computer?

pc spec:
athlon xp1900
fx5700 gc
512mb ram
60 gb

is it xp home or pro?? any sp installed?

Do you have recovery console installed to the machine? If not, you may need the XP cd. Arrange it and then reply with the situation. May be I can help..

xp pro 2600 build with sp2 all latest updates

Do you have the XP cd? or restore console installed?

i dont know where to look for the restore console.
i do have the xp install disk.

load the setup disk into the cdrom. restart. When it asks press "R" for repair or recovery

ive put disk in and pressed R.
it askes which windows i wanted to repair i pressed enter the pc then rebooted and asked me if i wanted to boot from cd i didnt press anything and it then came up with the error missing file or corrupt as before.

do tat thing agian.. Select R
then it will show
1: Windows system
or smthing simillar.. n will ask identifier enter the windows tat is corrupted. I assume tat u ve just one windows on it so it shd be "1"

thats what i did i only have 1) c:windows what next?
