Re Time Synchronization, Missing or Renamed Files

I'm re-writing this whole post because now there are three of us AOL members at a large discussion board and another member who can't get our email notifications of posts, since DST in early April, about three weeks ago. The time synchronization is supposed to happen about every week, but I hear that sometimes it doesn't, so did we fail to get on the DST address list from the site (Websleuths.com, not an "adult" site, and what can we do about that, if admin seem too busy to contact AOL's postmaster to unblock us? They don't even accept new AOL members, it's so difficult to keep it all straight, just let us stay on because we're old-timers.

Another question, about XP System Restore, has anyone noticed files that get renamed also get reported missing when using scans? What do you do about that? Thanks. Eagle

    Welcome to D-A-L

First as to the uninstall issues:

    Uninstall Programs Manually

Just because Windows XP has the Add/Remove Programs feature it doesn't mean your application will appear in the list. Furthermore, even if it does appear, it's no guarantee that the uninstall feature will work. When you run across one of these situations the items listed below will help in getting rid of the application. Be aware that these steps may not remove everything associated with the application and can impact other applications on the computer. Have a backup or restore point and use caution.

    *

Find the directory for the application and delete all the files in the directory. Delete the directory.
    *

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

To remove the application entry from Add/Remove Programs (if present) open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

Some applications have Services attached to them. If this is the case, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es, locate and delete the service.
    *

In Windows Explorer, navigate to the individual user settings and delete program references. Common places to check would be:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]
C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]

If no entries were found in the previous step and the application launches automatically, navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
    and delete the entry.

Thanks loads for all this information, which I hope means I don't have to download a program which might remove the Install.log. I will share with the other girls who're having the same problem, in our thread that's 6 pgs already. We've learned so much in 3 wks I had to completely reword my frist post but you answered exactly what I should have asked. I see this site also sends out email notifications of posts, so you'll probably know exactly what our problem is.

To answer your question, my email is sent by Outlook Express, but not the other peoples', my browser I.E., Windows XP Home, SP2, and I'm aware that AOL is always adding new things w/out telling us, was just now reading about "new" security features, even a Firewall. This morning I decided to disable mine for a while, my Norton one too, have SpywareBlaster and Spybot, still am not getting the email notifications. During the 3 wks, I'm the only one who's had three trickle through. We've all checked our time and other settings and compared notes for three weeks now, learning a lot but haven't hit on exactly what we need yet. The almost-new site owner also owns another forum which does not send out email notifications. She's not used to this. I've done some Restore Points and know some files were re-named for some reason, probably the ones reported missing. I don't have a disk, except the backup ones you make when XP comes installed in a pc. I planned to almost fill 120 GB's, wouldn't want to have to reinstall programs, probably wouldn't be able to even find all installation CD's.

http://www.cix.co/uk~net-services/delphi/INSO3000.htm has a 2-pg explanation,I've printed out to study and haven't read yet, like your post.

"Install.Log Reported Missing" is the name of the article. Maybe someone here is even having the same problems. I'll check back tomorrow. Thanks again. Eagle

P.S. I'm afraid the link doesn't work because it's in the UK so I'll try to retrace my steps to whereever I got it from.

Thanks for the Welcome. I'll have to try your instructions on the Cakewalk Pyro, having misplaced the Cakewalk Music Creator disk. But Websleuth Members' problem comes first. I haven't been very well organized here so far about where to start. Sorry. We've been going nuts nearly a month................................

The first three of us are in the EASTERN time zone, so I really think that has something to do with it, NOT our individual XP's, w/ SP2. It started at the same time for all three of us, DS time change in early April.

A fourth girl who's in, I think, CENTRAL time zone has a totally different problem. A post she tried this morning came out little boxes instead of letters, like Notepad or any other wrong "open with" program? I could not even scroll past it to where she'd apparently done a couple of short posts that came out okay. I've asked if she has Spybot, etc., if she's using XP and has done Restore Points, no ans. yet. She may have crashed.

Websleuths.com is powered by vBulletin like this site, uses wb@xMission for an email address, though I haven't personally contacted admin that way.

Everyone who tries to PM the owner from WS gets a signal that her box is full and she says she can't get the software guy to fix it. I'm assuming she's cleaned out her side of it. There's an assistant admin, Tybee, whose address is there on site pages and I don't think she can do anything but PM the owner, so round and round it goes. Since I first contacted you, all three of us have now had at least one Notification trickle through, so it isn't our machines, right? We contacted AOL, were told to and asked our admin to contact their AOL postmaster.

Yes, we've checked all our settings everywhere, checked Spam, but have been told mail gets returned as undeliverable, under certain circumstances not explained, rather than going into Spam, and we've tried changing type of notification on some posts to Daily instead of Instant, but I think the software people have to do something or we may need to switch softwares, as used to happen a lot with the former owner. I don't know if Tricia has ever used this one before, and how long it will be before more people have problems. Why us three, in NewJersey, Florida, and I'm in Michigan?

There's a site you probably already know about that might be useful to you but not to chickens like me, http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks1.htm , about 3 pgs. This morning I clicked Settings on the AOL page, Index, Internet, then Security, and clicked DEFAULT settings, on the first of the four icons. Just wanted to see if that would help, will check later if all four changed or I have to do each one. I was in a hurry. A friend I invited from another site says don't expect anything till tomorrow, Friday, since some of us clicked "Daily" today. Any ideas? I found the index page here and I'm also reading the past 9 pgs of threads. Thanks much. Eagle

    I know nothing about AOL.

Your issues don't seem to be XP issues in my opinion.
There is an Internet Time Synchronization Setting via:
    Control panel/ Date & Time/ Internet Time
    check Automatically Synchronize

Is this the forum you speak of?

    Yes, that's the Websleuths forum.

I had already checked the time synchronization, which is supposed to happen every week, and will go check it again.

Does that mean you agree with me that it's mostly a time and date thing? I just did an Edit Options here at DAL, changed to EASTERN time zone instead of Hawaii, and the one at WS was some far-away zone too during Daylight Savings change. Or maybe that caused the setting to slip or move (?) But theirs were okay.

Thanks for your opinion that our problem doesn't sound like an XP one. Just in case you might want to go to WS, our tech problems thread is in Forum Finesse, thread by Jersey Girl titled "I No Longer Receive...." and the girl with all the little boxes instead of text is Camper.

If I need to quote you, I'm sure you'll not mind? I can say "a tech forum", no name. Thanks again. Eagle
