    'wobbly sound'

hi, when i play videos, streams or audio in quicktime, i get a strange distorted wobbly play back. It's the same in programs like fl studio. Ive tried updating my audio drivers to no avail.
    Anyone heard of this problem?

Have you checked all the settings via Control Panel | Sounds & Audio Devices?

Alot of checks there. Under Volume tab | Advanced there is a mixer.

Is this a new problem? Were things sounding ok before?

How do audio cd's sound under this media player:

    start | run | MPLAYER2.EXE

yeah, when i play anything through windows media player, winamp or real player its fine, cds, videos or mp3s.
ive played with all the settings, and nothing seems to effect it.
Ive always had this problem on my laptop, with quicktime, so i just avoided using it, but now there is a problem with fl studio, a new program to me, i want to get it sorted.

This is from the FL Studio FAQ:

The sound is 'choppy' and strange (blips & glitches).

Be sure you've got the latest DirectX drivers & not emulated DirectSound drivers. You may try to put the mixing buffer length (see Wave settings) to the max. Note that you may also try to reduce it to minimize the latency. Today's soundcards can handle from 100ms down to 5ms latency. You may also have glitches problems if the playing loop eats too much CPU or when opening or closing other windows. Windows 9x is more or less animated, & some of those animations are very bad for the timing in audio applications. To fix that problem, go to the display settings (in Windows 98), select the "Effects" tab & uncheck the "Animate windows, menus and lists" box. There are other ways to optimize Windows 9x for audio applications, you can learn more about this on the Internet.

Once again be sure you've got the proper DirectSound drivers accelerated for your soundcard. Also be sure no other CPU consuming or special application is running at the same time.

    Adjusting Sound Settings
If you are experiencing any problems with the sound quality, please make the following adjustments to the QuickTime sound settings in Control Panel.

To set the QuickTime Sound Out settings:

Click the Start button on the Windows desktop.
    Select Settings, then Control Panel.
If there is a link reading 'View all icons' or similar at the left-hand side of the Control Panel window, click on it.
Look for the QuickTime icon. There may be several icons that read 'QuickTime' - the one you want looks like this:

    Q

and if you single-click on it will show the message 'Configures QuickTime software and hardware components'. Double-click the icon to run the QuickTime configuration program.
Open the topmost drop-down list and select 'Sound Out'.
The next box down probably reads 'DirectSound' - this is the setting you need to change. Click the arrow on the right side of the box and choose the next setting down (usually Wave out, but skip any settings that mention modems).
    Close the QuickTime Settings window.
    Close the Control Panel window.
