Did this just start to happen? Was it ok before?

What is the exact error message you get?

Is the drive listed under My Computer?

Also check the Device Manager: RT click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager for any "!" associted with the drive.

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with a failure.

Replacing the CDROM drive resolved this problem for us.

This happened to me when I went to install Unreal Tournament 2k3, from my Pioneer DVD-120S. If I wait long enough, my drive finally catches up. I tried the same disc in my cheap CD-RW drive, and it worked just fine.

I found out that this error happend with Safedisc protected CDRom.

Usually this happens to custom-written CDs as the quality of the CD-burners may not be that good. A scratched CD may also generate this event.

This may also happen if the CD is dirty so clean it and try again.

The CD drive may be dirty, especially the lens. There are on the market special CDs with little brushes for cleaning. If this doesn't work, of course after checking with a trusted data CD, you may consider opening the CD unit for a complete cleaning and lubricating the mechanisms.

Getting this error could mean that your hard disk controller is not working well. Check to see if you have difficulty accessing the hard disk (slow), or if the hard disk is having trouble powering up. Even though the controller is not working well you can still get all ok when running S.M.A.R.T. checks.

Device path: \Ide\IdePort1 - This error may be received if you have 2 cd-roms on the same ide channel with incorrect jumper settings. In my scenario, the cd-rom jumpers were set to cable select however the IDE cable did not support it. Configuring the jumpers to master/slave corrected this error.

90% of these mean a poor quality CD (usually the custom recorded ones). Also you can check the cabling on the device named in the message. If the cabling is working satisfactorily and you continue to receive this message, run hardware diagnostics on the disk drive named and on its controller. You might have to contact the vendor of the device for technical support. See also Q154690 link below.

This event is common to many controllers. See event id 9 from adpu160m.
