    Modem Problem!

Building computer. Bought new USR modem. Worked fine for a day and one half, then phone line went dead (no dial tone). Unhooked modem... phone line OK Plugged in modem only and get error message that there is no dial tone. It must be a simple problem but I can't figure it out.

Try unpluging everything for a few minutes.

    Unplug phone line; unplug computer.

Thanks! I did unplug the modem and phone line. I also removed the card and reseated it..still nothing.

I also called the phone company to see if their equipment would effect the modem...they are suppose to let me know if my phone line is OK or this modem could effect them and cause the problem..

Sorry mistakenly read USB modem rather than USR.

My USB sometimes does this & unplugging the whole computer usually sets it again.

Anyway you might look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with the disruption.

Also check the Device Manager: RT click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager for any "!" by the modem.

    Under eventvwr--

    Applications:
227 events, mostly information. Nothing suspicious.

    Service:
    5 error events--"The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load ppa3". Event ID: 7026

1 information event--"System file ah2drag.dll could not be restored to it's original state". Event ID 64004

10 information events--Application popup:USRprbdA.exe-DLL Installation Failed: the application failed because the window Station is shutting down". Event ID: 26

There were no "!" by the modem in Device Manager.

    Thanks again. dd

    Dear Jephree

The phone man was just here. My computer was still plugged in because I was try to ire-install the modum drivers to see if that would help. He said that one of my inside lines was shorted out. I said that I bet I know which one it is. I pulled the phone line to the modum and everything was fine. And I just bought the darn thing.

I have another problem though. I just bought an MCI VIA K8T800 + 8237 Chipset Based motherboard. It suppose to have autio but nothing comes out the speakers. I tried two sets of speakers, one self powered and the other one not. Thanks!

    Perhaps try this driver:

Realtek ALC Series AC'97 Audio Drivers

Also check dxdiag via Start | Run | dxdiag

Look under sound for any issues.

    Thanks for the help.

That start/run/dxiag is a great help...like looking inside your computer... electronically. The sound problem was simple to fix, and mostly my fault.

I have a replacement modem coming. Really learned something on this one. Who woould have thought that a brand new modem card would short out after a day and a half use.
