dvd rom and dvd rw missing

one minute it was there the next gone. in device manager it shows the yellow triangle on both drives, I have run the troubleshooter, i have uninstalled them both windows have detected them again with the same message, which reads
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39), but as the driver is on cd, you can understand what my problem is, I have checked the cables and they are fine I have even replaced the cables with new ones, still nothing. Please as anyone any ideas

    thanks

Did you do anything else when this happened? Any new hardware/ software?

Did these drives work ok before this?

Do you have SP2? Have you checked the manufacturers site for new drivers?

Both drives are effected the same? Same cable?

Also: look in your event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details. Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with an attempt to use these drives.

Message: The driver detected a controller error on %1.

    Explanation
This problem is typically caused by a failing cable that connects the drive to the computer.

I have replaced the cable, and it is fitted correctly, please help

    Cdrom 11

From a newsgroup post: "Check the UDMA settings on the IDE channel to which the CDRW/ZIP Drive are attached. I was getting peculiar behavior because Windows 2000 had turned on UDMA for my CDROM (which is definitely not UDMA capable). Also ZIP drives should not be on a port that has UDMA enabled".
Did this problem happen at the same time as the Palm Pilot?

Did you install software with the PP? How is it connected to the PC?

    Any possible conflict?

I searched here but don't know anything about these Palm Pilots.

Check the UDMA settings on the IDE channel to which the CDRW/ZIP Drive are attached How do I do this? any ideas?
Dvd drives both worked perfectly well before and after I installed Palm. I went to the manufacturers web page and it did a scan of my pc, but it said there was no dvd roms installed. Also if I go to device manage and uninstall them when I reboot it says that it has found new hardware and will locate drivers for it but when it as finished them yellow triangles are back.
this is driving me crazy i have been sat here since 11.00am this morning
    thanks

Can someone please tell me how to check/change udma setting for my drives.
Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager. Locate the entry for your hard disk controller and expand it. Then choose the IDE channel in question and right click and select Properties.
Before you do the above, check your bios settings first.
