delete or remove printer in xp

I added a printer on my home network, but it didn't work for some reason, so I asked to remove it and re-added it again. I'm wondering if I didn't wait long enough for it to successfully remove before I added it, because it still lists as "deleting", but it won't remove. So I tried to remove the 2nd printer I added to start over clean, and now it says "deleting" as well. I've turned off the printer, unhooked cables, rebooted several times, and let it sit on overnite in case it was just hung up, but it's still locked up. Can you advise?

i found these 3 suggestions re: similar problems
    in this thread

"Boot into Safe Mode and try deleting the printer."

"I frequently have trouble with something going wrong with my printer
(HP990Cse) and just have to fiddle around with things to get it back. After
going to Control Panel and removing the software from Add/Remove programs,
try removing your printers next. Control Panel | Printers and Other
Hardware, Printers and Faxes, check to see if your printer is there. If it
is, click on it and remove it or right click and choose delete. With the
printer still selected, go to File | Server Properties | Drivers tab at the
top and remove it from here also, if it is here. I am assuming you are using
WinXP since that is the newsgroup you are in. This should remove most of
what belongs to your printer. Now try restarting you computer. Upon reboot,
the operating system should notify you of new hardware found. Follow through
the windows to see if WinXP won't find a driver for your printer. If it
finds a driver, you should have a printer installed. Check our the Control
    Panel again to see."

"what I did was go to Classic Control Panel and delete the old
printer from Printers and Faxes. Then I went to
Start>Run type regedit. Navigate to Hkey_Current_User\Printers In
the right pane you should see your old printer
Device Old. Delete that entry. When you Restart your New printer will
show up in the registry as Device Old and the Old Printer shouldnt show up
    anymore in Printers and Faxes."
