XP Version
Hey, I'm using Win XP Pro 5.1, I was just wondering if there is a newer version out now, I was just curious, oh and one more thing (if thats ok) I can't seem to find out what sound card my computer is using, my sound driver is a Realtek AC'97, how do I find out what sound card I have?!, thanks,
Kind Regards,
Dan

XP pro v5.1 Build 2600 (to get the build number open 'My Computer' and from the top menu choose 'Help -- About Windows') is the original final release in 2002. There is a newer version available which simply includes the latest service packs and cumulative updates and fixes, but there are no new features and the interface is no different. Since the updates and service packs can be applied to the original release, there's no point in spending your money on a later release. On the contrary, I would advise against it. Lets assume the latest release includes SP2 which is installed automatically when you install Windows. SP2 has been a nightmare for many thousands of people. At least if it's on a separate CD you can choose not to install it. But if it's integrated with Windows setup on the latest release you could find yourself wishing you hadn't bought it.
As for your sound -- the Realtec AC97 is an 'onboard' sound-chip soldered on to the motherboard --- it isn't a removable card. You can still upgrade with a separate AGP or PCI sound-card but you would also have to disable the AC97 chip in the BIOS setup to avoid a conflict between the two.
