Perhaps someone may be able to offer me advice on how to resolve this issue before I go insane...

After configuring audio response times in Orion (music creator software) -switching between Direct Sound, Asio and MME - the quality of playback/record in other programmes worsened… clicks, pops, dropouts etc. The sound quality in all programmes was excellent before this, but now all recording - Audacity, Cool edit and Windows sound recorder - are all affected. Recording between programmes is bad (playback of imported wave files in audio editors is OK). Playback of wave in Windows Media Player is affected, yet playback in Winamp is perfect! Playback of imported wave files in programmes such as CrusherX (no problem with it’s own files) and Soundforge is also bad. Orion itself plays and records perfectly well. Playback of mp3 in all programmes is fine. Cds are not affected. Clearly, it’s a sudden inability of some programmes to handle wave files.

No error messages, no device conflict, no dodgy audio codecs… no yellow triangles or red crosses. Everything reported as normal… It’s all very confusing. I’ve tried readjusting everything - drivers and programmes, uninstalling and reinstalling but to no effect. I’ve been making music on my laptop for about a year and I’ve never had one instance of sound trouble in all that time, now it’s just a complete mess. Any help would be considerably welcome!
