Error "Bad cd block" I don't know what this means or how to fix it

You don't include any information about your computer and operating system in your question. Please click HERE and follow the instructions for your version of Windows. i have a hp pavilion ze5300 laptop, windows xp, toshiba dvd-rom sd-r2312, error says bad cd block
dvd's will play but cd won't read music or picture files on cd. system says device is working properly but when i insert a cd it says there is no disc in drive. it worked untilabout a month ago

Is the drive able to read factory made cds and just unable to read cds you've burned? You might want to consider purchasing a drive cleaner at your local computer shop or electronics store. Has this problem just started or is this an ongoing problem? Have you made any hardware changes recently or have you installed any new software?

problem started about a month ago. I don't think I have installled any software just befor that and no hardware. It will not even open Encarta or any home cd's
I uninstalled dvd-cd rom and reinstalled still does not work
