Disconnecting your broadband whether it connects via USB or RJ-45 while the computer / laptop is on has no affect on how performs.

Your PC / laptop might grumble at your for disconnecting the cable, but I'll just flag up the generic error of -

    RJ-45

This should cause no damage to your laptop / PC and it sounds like the BIOS maybe corrupt.

Thank you. It is certainly something that happened as soon as i tried to put the cable in (the wrong way). There is no signal (I guess) going to the screen although all the cables are connected. The tower functions ok, and makes all the right noises when you turn it on (and the DVD etc drives seem ok). Is there any reason why it should have affected the computer in this way?

Just do a load of reboots and see if that solves the problem. It sounds like a coincidence that the problem happened when you did that however xp (we are talking xp here aren't we?) seems to behave strangely when you unplug or plug in anything.
