    I messed up

When my computer asked to put in the system disk to boot for windows xp, it went into setup & wrote over my existing files. I can find the files in the "search" but cannot access them. Do you have any ideas?
    Thanks

I wonder why your computer asked you to put in the system disk?

Are you saying that you re-installed xp?

When you click on the files from "search" what error message do you get?

    Hey raye,

Please start a new thread regarding your problem.

    This is mghayden's thread

Unless you suspect an xp problem I would suggest posting in the "Internet Explorer Issues" section of this forum.

Also post more details; such as: have you contacted your isp?

(The following Quotes are from mghayden.)

We shut the computer down because of a thunderstorm & when I started it up the next morning there was a game disk left in the drive. I assume that's why it asked for the system disk, but that has happended at other non related times too.
Do you remember the exact message? Did this happen after your BIOS Post?

I evidently did re-install windows, but my previous program is still in the hard drive.
Do you remember what kind of install you chose? Repair?

When trying to open files that are found in "search" I get several replies: " windows cannot access specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropiate permission to access this file"; "Windows cannot open this file" then it ask if I want to search for what created the file; When I can open a file & get a subfolder I get "Read process memory0failed" when trying to open the subfolder. This is all using the heading "kazaa" for my search, but I get the same responses trying to open other files. Also, in "my pictures" file I get the "read process memory0failed" notice.
You have/had Kazza installed? This is a known problem source of spyware & related problems. Do/did you use Kazza?

I am fairly new at this, but do know just a little, Dad says I know just enough to get me into trouble. HAHA. Do you have any ideas to help me?
As we get more details more ideas might pop up

What is your current status? Do you have a functioning system? But just can't access particular files? You might want to download & run HiJack This & post your log in the "Spyware, Adware and Viruses " section of this forum.

    HiJack This

But also please post back here any reaction to my post

I do have a fully funtioning system other than the fact that I cannot access some of my files. The files I can't open are not just programs, but if I remember correctly they were all downloaded at one time or another. The programs files show up in "search" but not on the "add or remove programs" or "all programs" lists.
Thanks for the attention you are giving me. This is my first time using this site & I'm pleased with the quick responses & advice I'm getting.

Try looking at your Event Viewer under applications & look for the date of that thunderstorm (if you remember). See if there are any events (errors) at that time.
In xp Pro the event viewer is under Administrative Tools or in home or pro go to Start > Run & type in eventvwr.msc

To recover the downloaded programs you could try to delete what you find in search and the reinstall (re-download the program).

As to your system files such as "my pictures" hmm... I will have to look further into that. I will.

What about kazza? were these programs downloaded from kazza?
