XP Professional running chkdisk on boot
Hi
I run windows XP Professional (no updates have been to it as of yet - so no service pack 1 or 2). I have 2 harddrives - on 1 of the harddrives (only data on this drive no system or program files) I get an error that certain directories are corrupt and I can't go into those folders (this happens randomly) when i then reboot it runs a check disk "fixes" orphaned files and "index $XXXX" (not sure what these things mean) and then I can access those folders and all my files are in there just fine. sometimes it won't happen but it does often
any help
Thanks
Mike

First off you should go to Windows Update & install SP2 asap!
If you have some reason for not doing this then SP1 is absolutly neccessary.
This in itself might resolve your issues.
Also: look in your event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details. Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with a failure.

Thanks - I will install SP2 and post back any errors - I really appreciate the help

Dear 'mlaran',
Just a little note, would recommend you go to Microsoft Home (you can find on the update page) and request that they send you the SP2 CD. It's free of charge.
