    Re: Help!

With everything deselected are you able to start ok?

Just out of curiosity: Can you post the deselected items?

Deselecting everything did not help, still just the black WinXP screen but no little green progress bars.I have also tried all startup sequence options suggested in Troubleshooter. I will send list from start-up in am. tx

Can you still access safe mode?

If so check: the Device Manager: RT click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager for any "!"

Also: look in your event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details. Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with a boot.

Sorry that doesnt appear in columns as typed but I guess you can figure it out. There were 3 columns source, category and event. The first paragraph was in applications and the second in system with warning notices first and errors second

I can find nothing significant from those errors

New tack: What version of Norton started all this? Perhaps you can remove it completely in safe mode. We need to look it up at Symantec as a simple add/ remove program removal usually does not work with Norton.

Also: your display adapter under device manager is ok? I wonder about your graphics card. Do you know its' make & model? If not go to start | run | dxdiag | display. Post back Device info & Driver.

Do you have a graphics card or are you plugged into an onboard vga port?

Also: what updates are available when you go to: Windows Update?

    Norton is V.8.07.17C

As to display adapter, indxdiag, it says it's using a generic driver, but (excuse me for not knowing much), but isn't this 'cause I'm in safe mode.I've no computer training at all except for what I've learned stepping on my d... for the last 7 years.
    I do have a card it's a Leadtek w/nvidia GeForce4 mx440

About updates ,I can't access internet so I don't know. But I will tell you this, my OS is as installed 3 years ago, updating by Verizon lines at about 20K makes it too maddening. I do have SP2 disc, but many horror stories kept me from ever using it.

Symantec wants 40 bucks to talk to someone and wont help me online as I have SytemWorks 2002 ,in spite of the fact I pay every year for updates.I wont be paying them next year, AVG maybe.I cant seem to find a way in the program to uninstall only the AV.

As to Symantec I could only find these:

How to manually uninstall Norton SystemWorks 2002 or 2003 from Windows XP

Norton SystemWorks 2002 Standard Edition for Windows 2000/NT/Me/98/XP

Do you have the disk to reinstall if you choose to remove & reinstall?

Also as to the drivers for your card I could not find that exact model but found this:

    Welcome to Leadtek FTP site

If you have the proper driver the reinstall scenario usually runs as follows:

Boot the computer to Safe Mode options (F8 after BIOS) & choose:
    "Enable VGA Mode".
Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
Find your graphics card driver package & uninstall.
While in Control Panel, go to System, Hardware, Device Manager.
Expand (Click +) besides Display Adapter,
Right Click your graphics card, Choose Properties, Drivers, uninstall.
Reboot the Machine - It will re-detect your graphics card.
    Then re-install the drivers.

Jephree, I have tried the grapics card unist/inst but still wont boot. Will try the manual removal of Norton . No add remove for Norton will work in safe mode. ed
