Upgraded To XP Pro and now have no sound

I am new here and have looked around but haven't been able to find anything to help.

Here is my problem I recently had a new hard drive installed in my notebook, and when I got it back I upgraded it to XP Pro from Home Edition, when it was in the upgrading process it encountered a problem with the driver for the sound card I continued on and have installed the newest version of the driver. I have tryed installing the older driver and that didn't work I then re-installed the newer driver but it doesn't fix the problem either. I have ran "dxdiag" but it says that the device is working properly.

It doesn't play any sound at all not when you boot the machine when you shut it down or when you play any music.

I have installed and re-installed the sound card drivers so many times I am about ready to hit someone.

    Here is what I have:

Toshiba Satellite 1400 (it says the sound card is a ALI Audio Accelerator WDM - From Acer Laboratories)

Any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

ALI Audio Accelerator WDM - From Acer Laboratories

Is there any other detail via dxdiag on the device or current driver?

What driver have you been installing?

What happens with the Test at dxdiag?

The current driver is Ac97ali.sys this is the most driver, the older driver is Aliadwdm.sys

When I rund dxdiag it tells me there are no problems found and that the driver version is 5.12.0001.6003(English), the date of the driver is 8/28/2002, and the provider is Microsoft. It also tells me on the left hand side of the screen that the device ID is PCI\VEN_10B9DEV_5451SUBSYS_00011179REV_0. And that the name is Ali Audio Wave.

The two drivers I have installing and uninstalling and trying have been the newest version the Ac97ali.sys, and trying to uninstall that and installing the older version Aliadwdm.sys.

When I search Google for either of the above drivers this is one of the top items it returns.

Hopefully this answers all the questions you had and you will be able to give me some insight, anything will help.

How are you installing/ uninstalling etc.?

Do you see the yellow ! in device manager?

What happens when you delete the audio driver (whichever) & reboot? The built-in driver Ac97ali.sys should install.

This was from that MS Page:

Earlier versions of Aliadwdm.sys contain known issues with Windows XP.

Therefore, when upgrading to Windows XP or one of its service packs, look for Aliadwdm.sys in the Txtsetup.sif file. If present, delete it, and then install the built-in driver Ac97ali.sys.

However, if Windows determines that Aliadwdm.sys is a better match than Ac97ali.sys, try to keep Aliadwdm.sys because it is the best driver to use. For example, this might occur if it was a later version than the built-in driver. Because the driver was removed during the beginning of the upgrade, you receive a prompt for the location of the third-party driver Aliadwdm.sys. If you ignore the prompt for the driver, the upgrade completes, and a yellow exclamation mark appears next to the audio device driver in Device Manager.

After the upgrade, you can either update the driver using the ALI driver, or you can remove the driver in Device Manager and scan for new hardware changes so that the built-in driver is installed instead.
If all this fails Toshiba does have a driver of its' own found here:

Windows XP/2000 Sound Driver for Ali Sound System

I tryed installing the driver from the Toshiba website and it still doesn't work I think I will just take my Notebook back to the place I had the Harddrive installed and let them fix the problem, as it is still under warranty. Thank you for the help.
