OK... I took a couple days away to catch up on my job. I tried to boot again and after several tries got in via safe mode. I disabled all startup files and now it boots up. I did some trial and error and basically, only two of the startup files don't seem to cause boot problems. The other 10 or so do.

So, What do you recommend from here? I can try the XP recover... I can start anew... I can continue to try tweaks. What do you think?

go back to msconfig & enable all startups: then:

Run HijackThis & post back Only the 04 entries (startup):

Also check Windows Updates choosing Custom Install for any Hardware Drivers.
