Any idea why? Any changes? New software? Hardware? Drivers?

Check the Device Manager: RT click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager for any "!"

especially under sound, video, & game controllers

also check the tabs via Control Panel | Sounds & Audio Devices

Did your sound ever work? What happened?

Can you ID your sound card? or on-board chip?

go to Start | Run | dxdiag

    sound

Have you just upgraded to the new media player? Do you hear any sounds if you log off your pc?
