    Buffer overrun

I'd been running J2SE 1.4.2 until if failed a few days ago. Then I installed J2SE 1.5 which gave me the following error message a couple of days later:

    Buffer overrun detected
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSIEXEC.EXE

I get the same message everytime I try to re-install either version.

    Any help much appreciated.

That is a Windows Installer file.

Try this program to see if one of the Java's is clogged in the installer.

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

You may have to reinstall Java again after running the above tool.

Before trying to reinstall, uninstall any Java programs from Add/ Remove programs & also do a Search for Java 1.4.2 as well as Java 1.5 & delete all finds before attempting to reinstall Java 1.5

if the problem continues, be sure to post back, that error is the result of the new Data Exectution Prevention stuff in XPSP2. Sometimes its just a broken/old program, but sometimes something else....

What does data execution prevention do?

Data execution prevention (DEP) is a set of hardware and software technologies that perform additional checks on memory to help protect against malicious code exploits. In Windows XP SP2, DEP is enforced by both hardware and software

Java does not appear under the Windows Installer CleanUp. Also ran a search for both Java 1.4.2 and Java 1.5. Clean.

No luck re-installing Java. I still get the same error message.

Something I neglected to mention before. The error comes up under:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library.

    Any ideas?

    Do you have SP2?

Also what IS listed in the windows installer cleanup utility?

    Any .NET Framework?

just to re check if no java:

    is there J2SE Runtime Environment?

    if so remove it/ them.

    then try to download again

    No Java, no J2SE.

I tried twice, after installing the installer cleanup utility, to download J2SE. Got the same buffer overrun error each time.

I would suggest removing any .NET Framework from the installer list.

    & try Java download again.
