    Question Sasser Worm???

    I have ISSUES!!!
My computer was working fine Tuesday evening (5/25) , but when I tried to get on Wed, morning I had troubles.
First of all - I have a 1 1/2 year old Dell 2GHz, 256 RAM, 80 gig HD, firewall, antivirus protection (which I update regularly), and I check for Windows Updates regularly. I know I checked just a few days ago and I had no critical updates to download.
    Here's the problem:
I cannot logon. When I restart my computer it seems fine until I click my lonon name. It stops at 'loading my personal settings' then a BEEP and a messed up (partially transparent) window pops up with a large red 'X' that either says "Virtual Memory too low- your system is low on virtual memory"...yada, yada.
or "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000012d) click 'OK' to terminate the application".
When I click 'ok' I get a BEEP BEEP, my desktop freezes at the picture - there is no toolbar, no desktop icons, nothing but the picture.
I do the Ctrl Alt Delete and the above repeates or I get transparent blank messages and after I keep clicking out of them there is a black screen for a few minutes then the dreaded Blue Screen - but there is a message in white letters "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000003(0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down.
    (This is word for word)

    - then the computer eventaully shuts off.

If this is the Sasser Worm the fixes for it have told me to quickly click START-RUN-cmd and the some code. HOWEVER I can't get to my desktop - my computer freezes at the picture and I have no toolbars, etc to click. HELP!

One more thing - On restart, I am able to F12 and get into DOS mode. Is there a fix that I can run from there. Also am I going to loose everything I have store on my PC? I sure wish I had gotten around to backing up more oftem!!!

Which OS are you using? Can you boot into safe mode?

Sorry, Windows XP - I bought the computer Nov/Dec 2002. I haven't tried - I know I can F12, so maybe. I'm at work right now and this is my home system.

Boot into safe mode then use system restore to a point before you had the problem then:

Please post a HijackThis log to the forum.

Launch HijackThis, then press Scan, and press Save Log.

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

    Open that file.
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it.

Do not change anything just yet.
Come back to the forum, Right Click and paste its contents here.

Last night I tried to do as you suggested. I was able to boot into safe mode - while I was in I very quickly saved everything onto CDs, before continuing. After launching HJT, I tried to log onto the internet and post my HJT file. Everything crashed around me, no internet, no safe mode - all was frozen. Rebooting did not help - it would not go back into safe mode. It would freeze before the Admin logon.
Since I lost the HJT file when everything froze, I wiped it cleaned and reinstalled. I'm up and running, all critical updates downloaded, Norton installed and all of my files are on CDs, so I'm happy with the outcome anyway!
Thanks for your help - safe mode at least let me retrieve all the file I was afraid of losing!
