Question Help System Restore Can't Uninstall XPSP2

    Help,
I have a 4gb harddrive and an external harddrive that is 86gb. When I downloaded the xpsp2 I downloaded it to the c drive (4gb).( I didn't mean to do this.) Now I have only 5% disk space left and system restore needs at least 15% to work. I've deleted God knows what trying to make room, and it seems that the more I remove the less room I have. It will not allow me to send it to my larger harddrive. Can anyone tell me how to undo this mess i've made?
    Thanks,
    Susafurr

    ps,
To anyone who reads this, the first thing I tried was to go to add/remove programs. Theres not enough disk space availabe for that to work either. I also tried everything by going into safe mode.

well just going to worst case senario:
do you have your xp disk in order to do a repair or clean install?

    plus:

just a lingering thought after my first quick reply:

you might want to consider upgrading your 4gb drive if this is where you want your operating system housed.

you will be able to copy/ clone it to a new drive.

    Jephree,
You are what I am not, experienced. I do want to upgrade this old Dell Demension XPS R400. It's not in my buget at this time. I bought it a couple of months ago and the old owner had just bought this external drive. I have the xp disk for it.
So how do I do the clean install? Or clone it to the larger drive? Oh I should tell you that when I got this computer a couple of months ago my learning began. so I am just learning to crawl. Ok maybe that's a better discription, but at least I know to search and ask.
So again I thank you for your quick reply and your help.

We're all on the same curve (¯`·._.·´¯) somewhere

anyway to clone your little drive to the big you will need to go to the manufacturer's site ("Hard Drive maker".com) Look for downloads or software section; look for hard drive set-up (or post back your drive maker & I'll look for you).
anyway you can create a bootable floppy disk which will allow most drives to be copied.

as far as xp; these two links plus the main site cover repair or clean installs with your disk plus other usefull tips for xp.

either a repair or clean install will eliminate all service packs. the differences as to your system are enumerated in the link.

    good luck!

    keep asking questions

    1.Open windows explorer.
2.Click on tools/folder options. (at the top.)
    3.Click on View.
4.tick the box Display the contents of system folders and show hidden files and folders.
    5.click apply and Okay.
    6. go down to C:\ drive \windows and just beneath windows should be a folder $NTServicePackUninstall$, open that folder and click on spuninst and then on the spuninst icon and it should uninstall and replace the backed up files.
    7. "IMPORTANT" after you have uninstalled SP2 go back to windows explorer\tools\folder options\view and click on default to hide the system files again for safety.

    Hope this sorts you out................MIKIMOGO

Yeh I to have XP Pro on fat 32 file system. All my system files are in the c:\windows (There is a winnt under program files but if yours is under program files thats not the folder you want) just click on C drive and without opening anything the bottom folder should be windows if you are on NTF file system it could quite be WINNT. If the $NTServicePackUninstall$ is in your WIN NT Folder thats the one. IF you system files ie: system and system 32 files are in your Win NT folder then thats the one.
    All the best
    Mick
