error message on start-up,programs and files lost etc
hey
About 3 months ago i installed aol 9 on my computer. Next time i turned it on, the computer displayed an error message saying something along the lines of "Windows cannot load the user profile. windows will now log you on to a temporary profile. any changes made will not be saved.
CAUSE- Not enough memory"
This is not exactely what it says but it is something similar to it.
when the computer finally started, it was very slow and all of my music files had gone and also some of my images. Some images remained but had been moved to the recycle bin. also some of my music production software has gone missing. but some of it also remains on the hard drive.
My computer continues to run slowly and the above files are still missing.
can anyone suggest a possible solution asap please.

hey
So everything's been the same for 3 months?
No new errors?
Do you have multiple user accounts? Do they all behave the same?
Was this the exact error:
"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you
on with the default profile for the system.
DETAIL - Not enough storage is available to process this
command."
If so this is one solution for that profile:
Log on with an account that has administrative privileges. Create a new
profile, copy the corrupted profile's data over to the new profile,
delete the corrupted profile.
Also:
How much of your Hard Drive is "Free"?
How much RAM do you have?
As to your slowness you can read all of owen's tips in his "Instructions" as well as post a HijackThis log in the HijackThis Section if you so desire.
please follow owen's Instructions and then post your log in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.

That is the exact message yes.
no new errors.
my uncle set my computer up with one user and no need for a password if that makes sense. it logs on automatically.
i have a 45gb hard drive and about 30gb is free. not sure about RAM. the computer is about 4 yrs old so i dont think it wil have a lot.
how can i log on to the administrative account when ut has dissapeared??
that is not supposed to sound sarcastic honestly.

what i mean is my computer only has one profile and this is the profile that is corrupted. i think makes a little more sense than what i just said

As to RAM right click My Computer then click Properties:
Your RAM will be listed at the bottom of the info.
As to users go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts
Here you can set up a new admin account & transfer what data you want.
This may be more stable for the future.
Can you uninstall AOL?
Can you reinstall your programs? (preferably under new user).
3 months is a long time to hope for a system restore but it is worth a look:
go to start > run > %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
click on the arrow on the top left of the calendar to go back months.
Also if you have a full version XP CD you can insert that disk & start > run >
sfc /scannow
which will check & repair all system files.
And just to reitterate: check out owen's Tips!

ok then, 64mb of RAM.
my cd drive is having problems reading music cds and cannot write to a cd. i searched for this problem on this forum and was doing fine until i came across something called a BIOS.
Because of this problem i am a little unsure as wether to unistall things due to possibly not being able to re-install them.
as for the system restore, i tried one last night and it said that it was not possible to do.
i will try the new user thing later cuz i got school to go to.
thanks for the very prompt replies.

64mb of RAM
yikes
XP needs at least 128
should have at least 256
& works best with at least 512
I would not be supprised that this is the source of all your problems.
Do you know the make & model of your computer?
If not run this scan:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
& post back what you see under: System Model
We can then see what kind of RAM you can upgrade to.
By the way; the BIOS is the Basic In Out System; your motherboard; before windows.
