    Windows XP SP2 causes BSOD

    Hi
I have a Mesh PC with AMD64 3000+ processor, 512Mb PC3200 RAM and a 160Gb SATA hard drive. The machine had Windows XP SP1 installed and everything was fine. Just got broadband and Windows XP SP2 downloaded and installed itself and effectively killed the PC.
In normal mode the PC boots, goes to a very quick BSOD (too quick to read) and reboots.
In safe mode it does not load fully so can't get in and remove SP2, LNG option doesn't work either.

I can rebuild the machine from the recovery disks, but does anyone know any issues with SP2 that could have caused it so I can prevent it from happening again.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    thanks

    Steph

When booting in Safe Mode, does it boot into the Windows Desktop or does it crash earlier ?

The problem that u cant read teh BSOD while booting normal is that the system is configured to reboot automatically when encountering a BSOD

To change that it is necessary to do the following:

    1. Under My Computer, Properties, select Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Settings.
    2. Under System Failure, deselect "Automatically restart."

    3. Click OK on all dialog boxes to close them.

This way, if you get the BSOD error, you'll be able to see it and make sense of it instead of being dumped right back into your boot screen.

If you canīt access this within safe mode either then thereīs nothing much else to do but reinstall XP, then disable the option and install SP2

Hi Bad Karma - thanks for the quick reply
The PC partially loads the desktop in safe mode, but there is no start button and if you click any of the icons the PC just freezes. have tried to run programs from the run command in task manager but again it just freezes up.
I have put the drive inot a friends PC with sata drives and can't see anything on the disk. perhaps SP2 corrupted the FAT.
I think you're right about just having to rebuild it with the auto reboot option off just to try and detect what is causing the problem.

    thanks - Steph

Yepp, thats what i think. Since you cant even access it in safe mode, thereīs practically no way to turn it off and see the BSOD in all its pride.

Sorry for that, but i think itīs down to a rebuild m8
