Help I installed a fresk copy of XP today but now nothing works except firefox and internet explorer. Task manager doesnt even work. What shall I do?

how did you install? clean? repair?

do you have a full version cd?

if so you can run scannow.

go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow

it will at some point ask you to insert your CD.

Done that but it stops near the end and crashes

Just as a test try:

start > run > taskmgr.exe

Also you can try chkdsk via:

start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

Also: what type of install did you do? Was it a Clean install (formating the drive) or a Repair?

Was there any error when it crashed on scannow?

Well I did a brandnew install of xp using quick format. when stuff crashes it just says program not responding and thats it and never does anything. Taskmanager just shows in the taskbar when I want it but doesnt show up on the screen I will test them now

Done all of that and the pc is still broken, hijackthis doesnt even work!

I can't think of anything other than there was some problem with the installation

I would try to run a Repair Install.
