To me that doesn't make any sense. How can you have a dual-boot system without special software like Bootmagic and PartitionMagic?

You install 98 creating at least 2 partitions then you do a New Install of XP on its' own partition. XP contains the (NT) boot loader that will give the boot options on every boot.

How can you make a partition, though, without a special program like PartitionMagic? What if you want to run two hard drives - not one?

Personally, I don't like that setup anyway. I think VMWare would be a better way to go.

The above link re: installing 98 gives detailed instructions to create partitions.

Just briefly: 5. After you press ENTER, the Fdisk Options menu is displayed. Press 1 to select the Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive option, and then press ENTER.
    6. Press 1 to select the Create Primary DOS Partition option, and then press ENTER. etc.

    Two drives?
I'm using XP Pro on 1 HD, 98 on the other. XP is the primary 98 secondary,
    both on IDE 1.
When booting, hold down the "esc" key until it beeps (usually sometime after
    mem count), at this point
my bios brings up a menu asking me which device I would like to boot from. I
choose the HD I want and off I go.
No problems, no other software required. I can look at the 98 drive through
XP and move over any files I like.
Some programs even launch in XP from the 98 drive (a bonus I didn't expect).

I have two Hard Drives: one with WinXP Pro and one with Win98. I use BootMagic to link them together where it gives me a choice to load either one at start up. Bootmagic isn't that good, however, since I can never go into Win98 and back to XP without first reinstalling Bootmagic on Win98 (Bootmagic can only be installed on a Fat32 file system). I was thinking of getting VMWare, but maybe this could help me out more - so I don't have to buy anything else.

you will be doing a "clean" or "full" install. (not an upgrade or repair)

you will be asked during setup "where" you want to install.
direct the install to the unallocated partition.

If you intend to use multiple partitions, or dual boot, this is where you specify the size of the boot partition and or setup location for XP. If you are planning to dual boot XP, I would create a small 100 meg DOS partition (98) for the first primary partition, then an 8 to 10 gig partition for XP. You can partition and format the remaining space after XP is setup from Disk Manager.

    This is a good guide:
