    Question Power on,cpu fans run,no beeps,etc.

Puter belongs to my neice, I am looking it over, after cleaning 9 pounds of dust bunnies out of it,, I was told they left it on 24/7.I a thinking over heated cpu......is it common, to burn the chip out,... OK , let me explain what I have, HP xt948 ,power on, all fans come on,key board light flashes once, will not power up monitor, (monitor is good, tried several) No beeps,no humms,, I can get the dvd drawer to deploy and the cd drawer to open also. Other than that its a dead mackeral. Any possibilities I may have missed, would be appreciated. Thanks

With all that cleaning I would make sure all you cards (especially video) & RAM are "seated" properly. Processor as well.

Is the monitor plugged into a video card or the motherboard?

Are you familiar with clearing the CMOS?

Thanks for the quick responce, I rechecked the ram & video card ,made sure they were seated, the monitor is plugged into the video card (ASUS AGP-V3800M/32M). Just a note the computer was already in this condition before the dust bunny removal ,, I am tech savey slightly,, I need a refresh on the CMOS? Thanks

Was everything working ok before cleaning?

Clearing the CMOS may get things going further than they are.

Also try to boot without the Video Card & see (hear) what beeps you get.

Repeat test by removing RAM. These things should create beeps of some nature.

    Is this your PC?

Thanks once again, The PC is not mine, I am just looking it over,it came to me not working,, I have done the unplug video/ ram etc.,,, I fear the worst I believe they fried the mother,, I found they had no batt backup or surge protection. They left it on 24/7. There are NO beeps at all, no humm other than fans. They had taken it to some local guy who said it was either power or chip, I probably think so. He quoted $300 or ? to repair. They are not high tech ,mostly web surfing and family photos,I believe they would be better to purchase another the cost of repair,, I would like to get their photos off the hard drive at some point, I have an HP also, but I'm still under warranty so I don't want crack into mine and slave their HD yet. I have not replaced a mother before, and since HP dosent give you any disks , I would pretty much be strating from scratch ,Right? If so I would much prefer to build my own from scratch,, I've always wanted to. A future dream... Thanks again ,I love this site. It helps since I lost screen savers to gameville. I love games but I miss the tech talk.

When I asked: "Is this your PC?" I meant the link I posted to ID the computer
    (very slow loading btw)
A quick look at processors for that computer start around $175.

That would be another thing to check: does the processor get warm (or any heat at all?)

It could be the processor rather than the board; do you have another you could test?

If it is the board I would buy or build new rather than replace.

    I would build new myself

The other parts may still be usable.
