Occasionally my laptop tells me my disk needs to be checked for consistency.

Is this happening at boot?
After a previous crash?
Does chkdsk run?

You might want to manually run chkdsk
Go to Start > Run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot.

chkdisk cannot run because volume is in use ny another process??

& then it says:

Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? {Y/N}

type Y then press enter then reboot.
