Hard disk showing incorrect amount of space left.

Dunno if it's a big deal. In fact, I'm pretty sure it isn't, it's just an annoyance when I know I have something like eleven gigs left and it shows that I have only like eight. Any reason that this would be going on?

The confusion usually comes about because there
are two different definitions of "gigabyte."
    Almost exclusively,
in the computer field (including Windows), the term "gigabyte
    refers to 1024 x 1024 x 1024 (1,073,741,824) bytes.
    However all
hard drive manufacturers define a gigabyte as one billion bytes.

I am aware of that, but I mean a vast difference.

My computer was saying that I had 3.5 gigs left on my computer when, in actuality, I had more than 10 gigs left. It often does this when I put new things on the computer that are of substantial size and then delete them. I don't think it registers that this space has been regained and considers it taken up until I let the computer rest for a day or two, at which points it gives me the correct space left. Again, it isn't much of a problem, just an annoyance for the most part. I'm unsure as to whether or not there exists a fix for this, but if there's some sort of symptom that might be causing this, I'd like to know.

    2 posts I found:

    "Ah, the mysteries of Windows.

    Possible answers:

    1. Recycle bin not emptied

    2. New System Restore Point. I have had much better success tracking disk
free space with System Restore off.

    3. Microsoft can't count.

I have also noticed this behavior. Also that if I delete a large-say 100 MB
file, and empty the recycle bin that Windows Explorer reports
some ridiculously small increase in free space until a reboot."

    "Reboot.
Be sure to empty the recycle bin.
Do you have Norton Protected Recycle Bin?
When I had it, I disabled it because once I was sure I did not want
it, it went to the recycle bin.
If there was any question, it went somewhere else."

    Ah hah.

It could be the Norton Protected Recycle Bin.

    Thanks.
