    Links won't work

I did a big ms upgrade (automatic) and now, I can't click on any links. As soon as I do, my comuter freezes and I have to "end task" with the tast manager!

It prompted me to restart my computer afterwards Any ideas? I have winxp home.

What upgrade? The recent (tuesday) release? or SP2?

    Are you using Internet Explorer?

You are prompted to restart after you end task? or did you mean after the upgrade?

    try this:

    1. Quit all programs that are running.
    2. Click Start, and then click Run.
    3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
    4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
    • Shdocvw.dll
    • Msjava.dll
    • Actxprxy.dll
    • Oleaut32.dll
    • Mshtml.dll
    • Browseui.dll
    • Shell32.dll

You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs after you click a link

Sorry, yes after the upgrade I was prompted to restart my pc. I AM using IE. When I click a link - things freeze up and had to end task to thaw out!

I'm a moron. I don't even know what upgrade it was.. I just have auto upgrades etc and trust them. Truly a moron, eh?

One more thing..... When I restarted my pc, I got this message before it shut down:

1 Live~1 EXE-DLL Installations failed . The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down.

Thank you, Jephree! I'm just a tad afraid of fooling with the registry, as I'm not a genious! But will, if I can't find an easy way out!

Thanks to you both for such super fast help!

you can go to windows update via start all programs and choose view installation history in the left bar there

would be interesting to see what you took. there were a couple concerning .NETFramework as i recall

also the Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
    4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK. is not changing the registry per say; just re registering the urlmon.dll

let us know what was installed yesterday or tuesday

you can remove this update to see if it changes anything.
make sure you have the box checked at the top of add/ remove programs that says show updates then scroll down to Windows XP Software Updates:
    Windows XP Hotfix KB867282

personally i would try the urlmon first but maybe something in the download got messed; there were 10 downloads in that one package!

WOW! Thanks, Jephree! I didn't even know that I could check my updates like that. I appreciate that information. I sent the information from that site , to myself at work, so that I can print it out and read it.

Thanks for your patience and helpfulness!
