Need Windows Backup Utility
I have a virus (Downloader.Trojan) on my windows XP(home edition). I have been using microsofts online support to try to remove it. It says that I need to install a backup utility which is not in the default installation of XP home version. This can only be installed from the CD-ROM from windows XP Home edition. My computer came loaded with the software, so I do not have the CD-ROM. So I'm stuck here after already spending 6 hours to get to this point. Is this something that I can download??? What do you suggest??

What is the make & model of computer?
Is there anything in the manual about backups?
Did the manufacturer supply you with any disks?
Do you have a cd burner in the computer?
Can you share with us the exact source of Microsoft Support you are refering to?

I initially got information from Symantec's site on "Backing up windows Registry" Document ID # 199762382617. This stated that the Backup Utility is not included in the default installation of windows XP Home Edition. It then directs me to Microsoft's article # 302894 " how to install backup from the CD-Rom in windows XP home edition.
My software came loaded on the computer, so I do not have the disc.
Sony Viao Computer
Have a CD-Burner
Nothing in the manual on this.
Any help is appreciated.

2 things you can do before you clean
1. Create a Restore Point.
2. go to Start > Run > regedit
then click File on the upper left then Export
send to My Documents
this will copy your current registry to My Documents from which you can restore it if neccessary.
You can also burn this file to a rewritable cd if you wish.

Depending on the brand of computer you have this may or may not work. Go to start -> search. Type in NTbackup. A file may or may not come up if it does click on it and it will install NTBACKUP. I know thta this works for Toshiba brand products but I am not sure about other brands. Hope this helps
