Question Like many of you, my system freezes, then blue screen...

Hi, this is my first post to this particular forum. I hope that someone can help me. A few hours ago, for no reason I can think of, my computer just started moving slower & slower.

Then, when I would connect to the Internet, immediately, the mouse would freeze, and not even "control, alt, del" would do anything. I've been having to turn it off with the computer's on/off button, which I'm sure is not good for it.

If I don't turn it off right away, I get that "blue screen of death". It thinks that I have recently installed new hardware or software, but that is not the case. I don't know what to do. I am using my boyfriend's computer to write this, as I can't do it on mine.

    Someone.....Please Help?!!!

    Sincerely,

    CyberKat_6

Along with Spud's ideas you can boot into Safe Mode

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP

Then look in the Event Viewer for Errors
How To View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Look for errors that coincide with a freeze. (The time will be listed).

You can search these errors here:

Hi, Thanks for your ideas. I tried 'em all, but I guess the computers OS was just too far gone.

I had to get the hard drive re-formatted. It runs great now, but it will take me forever to get back all the things I had stored that were lost.

Well, hope I can be of help to you some time or I may need your help again.

    Thanks for the update.

If you have really valuable data on your drive you should regularly back it up.

There are many programs out there for this purpose & many opinions.

The installation of a second hard drive just for backup would be ideal.
