    Monitor outage

    Hoping someone can help.......
Upon powering up my computer after moving it, there was no display on the monitor. The monitor was tested at another power source, it was getting no power. I connected another monitor that worked for about a day then it also lost power. Now I have a monitor connected that only gave a blinking power light upon power up of the computer. Thought it was the video card, so replaced it, still nothing. The monitor will run when connected to the motherboards video card. We go to the point with the new video card that we will get display durring BIOS and initial start up of XP but after initalizing XP the monitor display cuts out. We ran a check on the motherboard and got a problem error saying that the PCA was disabled ( I think I got those initials right) any ideas we are at a loss. The beep codes are fine.....although at times before the monitor problems I waas getting a low virtual memory error and all my programs shut down and then I would get a series of beeps from the computer that would not stop until I powered it down and restarted. We just added a lot of RAM to the computer the beginnig of this year to cure this virtual memory error, so we are confused why the error is occurring again. I use the computer for intensive photo editing, negative scanning and printing.

    please help.....

Everything was fine before that? (With the monitor)?

When you speak of "power source" are you refering to the house outlet?

The monitor works just fine when plugged into the motherboard?

    Was that perhaps VGA disabled?

You are still getting memory errors?

Have you checked rt. click My Computer then click Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change > System Manage Size

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? You can try to change Resolution and Refresh in Safe mode and reboot.

Have you tried booting into VGA mode?:

Boot the computer to "Enable VGA Mode".
Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
    - Find your video driver package & uninstall
While in Control Panel, go to System, Hardware
Device Manager. Expand (Click +) besides Video
-Any devices listed, Right Click, Choose Uninstall
Reboot the Machine - It will re-detect your video card
    Re-install the drivers
Go back to Device Manager and change your monitor
    definition to the correct vendor/model.

    Or consider the Recovery Console:

You can use the recovery console to re-enable the vgasave driver.
    Here's
the KB article on installing the recovery console:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307654

While in the recovery console, the command syntax is (w/o quotes):

    "enable vgasave SERVICE_SYSTEM_START"

the monitor was working fine prior to me moving it, yes.

the monitor had no power when plugged into another outlet at the house.
We have since gotten a replacement power cord and now the monitor has power when plugged in.

The monitor did run of the motherboard video card, but would not off the other video card. It would come on when I first turned the computer on ( when connected to the stand alone video card, and last only until the initailization of windows, then would go black, but I can still hear the computer running. And if unplugged and plugged into motherboard video card then you have the desk top.

Have not changed virtual memory settings but will try that...thanks
Have not had a chance to use the computer yet because we have been messing with it, will look out for virtual memory errors once i am back in business.

Seems that your suggestions have helped, the stand alone video card is now working again....Thanks alot now I can get back to business, my customers will be happy not to wait any longer.

Any idea what might have happened to cause it to not respond all of a sudden? Kind of confused on the monitor power cord also, as well as the back up monitor going out, still can not get any power from that one, even when replacing power cord.

Thank you again for the help.....

Seems like you lost your card drivers; perhaps just from the plugging & unplugging. As to the other monitor:

Just a few other things from a little browsing:

Is there a fuse on the power cord?

    Fuse in the monitor?

A reset button on the monitor?

The monitor itself could be going bad. If you bumped it around you
    could have caused the failure.

Then these issues seem to apply to faulty displays rather than No display; but fwiw:

Magnetic fields can cause the monitor to have display problems - maybe
you have an unshielded speaker, or some other device that is emitting
a magnetice field, too close to the monitor now.

    Check the monitors manual; look for how to degauss the screen and make sure you have no power cords;
speakers; or phones too close to the monitor; also recheck all connections.

Look at the buttons or the menu on your monitor for a degauss function and
run it. Look in your monitor manual for help. You either have something
magnetic, such as unshielded speakers near your monitor, or you got the
monitor near a magnetic field when you moved it. This is what caused the
colored hue. You can't have anything that has a magnetic field near your
    monitor.

Thanks I will try degaussing, i do have two speakers on the desk aside the monitor. I will move them. I did not know that just disconnecting could cause me to loose the drivers.

I think i have gotten to the cause of low virtual memory, i actually got a message that i had low memory on my c drive this weekend, unusual because I have never been close before, checked memory about 4 months ago and not even a 1/4 was in use and no new programs added, several pics added though. i have a 120G hard drive and 1024 RAM.

Deleted a bunch of programs that we have not used or aren't going to use but did not seem to free up any space. Seems like something else is taking up the space I can't find. Ran spyware removal, several, and updated virus software. They found nothing.

But seems like all else with the monitor is going ok for now.

well just when you think all is going well, we have lost parts of our program for the printer and the keyboard has decided to type what it wants, none of the buttons do what they are supposed to and the caps lock and alt and shift keys just cause the computer to beep. No idea what is going on. Something new every day.

Have you looked at the Event Viewer?

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q308427

With the source & Event ID you can use this site to get some info:

    http://www.eventid.net/search.asp

Also have you tried a restore point?

did try to restore but it will only allow me to restore to Jan 29, 2005 the problems started before then. Have not looked at event viewer, will try this.

Was told that possibly the computer maybe being used as an email slave, my husband was getting delvery failure notices on his email for mails he never sent. How would you go about detecting this. Mcaffee is what we are running, updated. It did dectect and delete a crital yesterday, apparently a current virus that affects drivers. Seems to be runnig better with the addition of another hard drive and splitting things up between the two. Mabey we are past it, monitor still running ok no more problems there.

Thank you for all your help.

The e-mail failure notification is a common spam title.

You might want to follow all of Owen's instructions HERE once you have completed that post your log on the Spyware, Adware and Viruses board.

And let us know what you see in the Event Viewer.
